I live in San Rafael, California (94901). My husband wants to grow corn this year. Can you grow it in very large pots? We don’t have a lot of space in full sun areas around the house.
They do need full sun right?
When do you plant for this area?
Thanks for your question.
Corn needs full sun.
I haven’t tried growing corn in containers, but I found a couple of resources for you about it!

I recently planted some corn seeds and they’ve grown to about two feet now. Do corn have flowers that need pollinating by bees? We recently discovered that our bees have been dying off from some parasite and I noticed that our bee population are almost gone from my area. Thank you.
Corn is usually wind pollinated.
You can pollinate it by hand, if you are concerned.
Here’s a good thread about it.

Recently someone told me that every other stalk should be pulled to make sure remaining stalks get enough nutrients. Is there any truth to this?
@grace,
Thanks for your question.
Typically, you only need to thin seedling plants, because more seeds sprouted than you need and they would crowd each other out if they were allowed to continue growing.
If the stalks were spaced appropriately when they were planted, then there would be no benefit to pulling out every other stalk beyond the seedling stage.
I live in Baton Rouge, LA, after sweet corn is planted, how long until harvest, 60 days?
When do you start planting sweet corn in Kansas is your garden ?
Hello
I planted sweetcorn in 3 inch pots around 2 to 3 weeks ago and put them in a propagator. When the shoots came through I removed the lid. The plants were doing fine then the other morning 4 of them flopped on their side and are really limp. I’m not sure what happened as 5 of them are still going strong. Can you help?
How much water does corn need?
hi how many stalk usealy grow on plant and how do you know when to pick and whats the best way to pick
I grew about three flats of sweet corn in a grow room at my university and it took longer to plant then I hoped due to longer cold season and faster growing of the corn. It was pretty old and about a foot and a half tall when I planted it in a raised bed of compost in four ten-foot rows about 20 inches apart with 6 inches between plants in a row. It is now a couple of weeks latter and it has thickened up and looks healthier but it is still just a foot or two tall. I see teasels and silk and am freaking out. I do not know what to do.

Can you grow sweetcorn in pots in a greenhouse.
Thankyou
Descriptions of the amount of water that corn needs seem to me to be extremely vague. Based upon what I’ve read, I’d conclude that watering once a week with a layer of 1″ thick of water would be the correct amount. How about a clearer answer.
Should corn be watered:
1) once a week deeply (i.e., at least 1 inch of water)
2) twice a week?
3) every other day?
Or?
I live in sunny southern California. Often, we have overcast weather in the morning and sometimes dew in the morning. Towards May and June we’ll be getting more sunny hot days that are generally dry.
Thanks,
Jim
When I bought my corn seedlings at the nursery, they came in groups of 2 or 3 seedlings. Do you let them all grow or remove the other one or two seedlings and just leave one?
——-
With corn plant both of them, then thin out the one that does not look as strong. Make sure not to pull the seedling out to thin it. Get a pair of garden shears or scissors, and cut the less healthy looking seedling. But, give them a little time to grow to see which of the two or three seedlings will be the healthiest plant.
My class is growing corn as a science project. What is corn’s germination period?
Just wondering what type of spray to use on my corn. The best all around that want hurt other stuff in a big garden. For use on alot of the elements you listed that corn may occur. Grew some first time last yr. and it got one of the things in your list. The big white growth around the top and down in the cob itself. Has to be a spray for this to help with all these things. Let me know if you know this answer.
I know it needs alot amonia here in Mississippi also to grow.
I live at a 7000 ft elevation in Guarne, Antioquia, Colombia. There is no sweet corn grown here. Can you tell me the resaon why and if I bring seeds from the USA, can I grow sweet corn here.
Thank You,
Jeff
Hello,
My corn is growing wonderfully but seems too thick. Should we thin it out so it will have room to produce?
I have planted Kandy Corn and the plants are about two inches tall now. They are on raised rows. We recently had 7 1/2 inches of rain in a two day period and my garden flooded. The rains began shortly after I planted and most seedlings were just breaking the surface. It has been a week now and the plants are between 1-2 inches tall. I have several plants that have begun to turn brown. The soil is still quite moist. One part of my garden is lower than the rest and that is where the majority of the water settled, but that is not where the majority of the plants have been that are dying. Yesterday I pulled up about ten plants that were brown and today there are about ten more.
I also lightly sowed the rows with 13-13-13 fertilizer about four or five days ago.
I have beans and peppers planted in the same garden that have undergone the same treatment, however, they all seem to be doing good.
Do you think it is from too much water or could it be from the fertilizer?
Also, I have my seed planted about two inches apart. Will I need to thin them out or is this fine?
Any help would be much appreciated.
I’ve got corn stalks about 12 to 18 inches tall and it looks like something is eating away at the leaf of the stalk and there seems to be bugs in the center of the stalks – what is the best pesticide to use on sweet corn.
Is there a special fertilizer and a certain time to fertilize corn? Mine is already about three feet tall.
last year we dried sweet corn – pulled the husk back & hung upside down – can we remove the kernals & re-plant them this year?
When do you put a few drops of veggie oil on the ends of the ears to deter corn worms?
Our corn seems to grow fine, but just as the ears start to develop, and if we have any wind it blows it down. Roots never seem to develop properly. Any suggestions??
How to avoid corn that is dry
